Marie-Sophie Dion
Prescription Optician · Designer · Eyewear Frame Creator
The only optician in North America who both designs AND manufactures ready-to-wear and custom eyewear frames.

HER VISION
For an elevated look and style
For more than 35 years, this prescription optician, designer, and eyewear frame creator has stood by one conviction: eyewear is an art, not a mass-market industry. Every frame should follow the contours of the face, respect its proportions, and enhance its expression. It is this uncompromising pursuit that has built her reputation among people of all ages, celebrities, fashion designers, and clients who travel across the continent to consult her.
For her, a pair of glasses is not simply a vision correction tool. It is an instrument of identity, a source of confidence, and an object of distinction. As she says: “It’s an accessory to stand out, to speak without opening your mouth.”
HER DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
The frame that adapts to the face
“I design frames for those who refuse the ordinary, who understand that their style is a language and that their identity is unique.”
— Marie-Sophie Dion, 2026The philosophy of Marie-Sophie Dion is rooted in one fundamental belief: the frame must adapt to the face, never the other way around. This radical reversal of the traditional eyewear paradigm — where the client chose from standardized shapes — lies at the heart of her creative approach.
-
1.
More artist than businesswoman: Marie-Sophie Dion describes herself as “more of an artist than a businesswoman.” Guided by intuition and passion rather than financial calculation, she allows things to evolve organically. Her creative process does not follow commercial logic: she designs frames because she envisions them in her mind, not because market research tells her to.
-
2.
The aesthetic DNA: form follows the face: Every frame is designed for a specific facial structure. Technique meets artistic intuition in a subtle interplay of angles and curves. Straight lines and sharp angles project authority and confidence; round and oval shapes evoke softness and approachability. Marie-Sophie Dion masters this language of shapes the way a composer masters tonalities.
She constantly photographs the things that catch her attention in the world around her — a texture, an architectural line, a play of shadows. When she looks at a garment, she instantly imagines the frames that would complete the look. This designer’s instinct is present in every moment of her life.
-
3.
Timelessness over trends: Marie-Sophie Dion categorically rejects fleeting fashions. She designs pieces meant to endure for decades, not just seasons. The clearest proof is the capsule collection she created for fashion designer Marie Saint Pierre in 2007, which still looks perfectly contemporary today, nearly twenty years later. None of the models feel dated — they are timeless.
She even advises her clients against following mass-market trends. Her goal is to create frames that clients will wear with the same pride ten or twenty years from now.
-
4.
Eyewear as a language: For Marie-Sophie Dion, glasses are not a medical device one simply endures, but an instrument of expression one consciously chooses. They are a silent language — a way of presenting oneself to the world before even speaking. Every frame tells a story: the story of the person wearing it.
HER UNIQUE EXPERTISE
Personalized Optophysiognomy
Marie-Sophie Dion developed a unique methodology she calls Personalized Optophysiognomy, a system that combines art, science, and technology to design the frame perfectly suited to each individual.
The method includes, among other things, the analysis of approximately 15 facial features. But science is only the starting point. Marie-Sophie Dion goes beyond measurements: she also considers each client’s personality, lifestyle, wardrobe, and self-image goals.
Does the client wish to project a serious or playful image, discreet or extroverted, rebellious or charming, and so on? This level of introspection is essential to fully understand what each client prefers.
Next comes the analysis of the person’s facial shape, features, and measurements.
Cette approche repose sur 15 piliers fondamentaux :
Skin tone color: Analysis of undertones (winter, summer, autumn, spring) to identify the colors that harmonize with and enhance the face.
Iris and sclera color: Use of analogous or contrasting harmonies to enhance the eyes.
Hair color: Selection of shades that avoid a uniform mass effect and create visual balance.
Temple width: Determination of the ideal frame width (the edge of the lens should sit between the corner of the eye and the temple).
Shape and position of the nose bridge: The most important aspect is achieving a perfect fit on the nose, ensuring that the angle of the frame matches the angle of the nose.
Interpupillary distance: Positioning of the lenses to optimally center the gaze.
Eye size and shape: Selection of frames designed to harmonize and balance the appearance of the eyes.
Presence of exophthalmos: Adjustments made to prevent eyelash friction and ensure greater comfort.
Eyebrow height: Positioning of the frame according to the natural eyebrow line.
Eyebrow shape: Alignment of the frame to harmoniously follow the curve of the eyebrow.
Ear height: Adjustment of the temple arms to achieve a natural horizontal line.
Ear proximity: Adjustment of the temple arm length for optimal support and fit.
Cheek shape: Enhancement of the face’s contours without adding visual heaviness.
Jawline angles: Selection of shapes that soften or balance pronounced facial features.
Presence of dark circles, under-eye bags, wrinkles, or scars: Strategic selection of frames designed to soften or divert attention away from these features.
Marie-Sophie Dion Atelier
Opened in Montreal in 2014, the Marie-Sophie Dion Atelier is the first eyewear frame manufacturing workshop in Quebec, and the only one in North America led by an optician-designer who conceives and oversees every stage of production.
Know-how imported from France
To achieve the level of artisanal excellence she demanded, Marie-Sophie Dion brought in a French master craftsman with specialized technical expertise in frame manufacturing. This transfer of European know-how, combined with her own design vision, made it possible to create an exceptional workshop in Quebec.
A 5-Axis CNC at the Service of Design
The technological heart of the workshop is a 5-axis CNC (computer numerical control) machine imported in 2018, capable of cutting cellulose acetate with micrometric precision. This machine translates the digital designs of Marie-Sophie Dion's team into three-dimensional shapes, before several hand-finishing steps give each frame its unique character.
A Four-Step Summary
Each frame from Marie-Sophie Dion's workshop goes through approximately 35 distinct steps, from the initial in-store or video conference meeting to the final fitting on the client's face. In summary, however, there are four main phases spanning a period of 4 weeks:
- Sketch, client approval and digital design
- CNC cutting of cellulose acetate
- Multiple hand-crafted finishing steps
- Personalized fitting on the client's face
Cellulose Acetate
Marie-Sophie Dion works exclusively with cellulose acetate, a luxurious polymer derived from cotton — a renewable resource. This premium material offers a depth of color, feel and durability unmatched by common synthetic plastics.
Far from the grainy look of 3D printing, it can achieve crystal-clear transparency and push colors to full saturation, playing with matte or glossy finishes.
Thirty-two colors and as many laminated combinations exist in Marie-Sophie Dion's collection, and she gladly travels to Europe to select them twice a year.
The Personal Touch
An Intimate Signature, Engraved in Every Temple
Every MSD-signed model bears the name of the client who inspired it, engraved on the inside of the temple. This intimate signature transforms each frame into a named object, a collector's piece tied to a personal story.
Because the artist always draws inspiration from a face to create a new model, this naming concept makes perfect sense. It then falls to the team to decide whether to reproduce it in multiple copies or not, based on the estimated popularity index and current trends.
Innovation
Virtual Custom Fitting
In July 2025, Marie-Sophie Dion launched a 100% virtual custom frame consultation and design service, accessible by video conference. This innovation allows clients from around the world to benefit from her expertise in personalized optophysiognomy without traveling — a first that democratizes access to high-end Quebec eyewear.
"I love guiding people in their search for glasses that express their authenticity, whether they're from Quebec or anywhere on the planet. The magic of the web allows me to chat with them live on Zoom or WhatsApp to define their measurements and preferences. I screen-capture to then draw the ideal frame and send them the photo by email. Amazing!"

Anniversary Mural
To Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the MSD Brand
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of her manufacturing business, Marie-Sophie Dion envisioned a multicolored mural composed of 500 client portraits. Printed on a 12-foot wall in the showroom of her Old Montreal boutique, this collective work is at once a gesture of gratitude, a living gallery and a showcase of Quebec eyewear design.
"This mural is a way of saying thank you to the many people who trusted me and who, each in their own way, fueled my inspiration and determination."
